That's right. School's almost out, the buzz of lawnmowers is ubiquitous, and it's time to laze in a hammock and read to your heart's content, or toss a comic in your bag and head for the beach, or lie in the grass with your well-worn perennial summer favorite (Leaves of Grass, perhaps?). If, occasionally, you should lift your eyes from the page, blinking into the endless blazing day and longing for company, a full slate of RAWK summer offerings awaits you.
We'll be at the Vicksburg District Library next week, to help them kick off their summer reading program: Spark a Reaction! If you're entering grades 6 – 12, join us on Thursday June 19 from 3 – 4 pm.
And in honor of poet Kevin Coval's visit to the Kalamazoo Public Library, we're hosting Louder Than … (our celebration of the spoken word). We'll write poems and (verbally) hurl them at an unsuspecting audience. Wednesday June 18, 5 – 6 pm, Central branch, grades 5 – 12.
For more information about Kevin Coval, and Louder Than a Bomb: The Chicago Youth Poetry Festival, see this documentary.
Now, we don't want to startle you. The last thing we'd want is for you to get up too hastily and upset your glass of lemonade, but the window is closing for registration for our Youth Summer Writing Workshops. This is your chance to indulge with us in one whole week of telling it like it is, making it up as we go along, looking fear in the eye and laughing in its ugly face, and making a world of our own design. Not only will we have a debilitatingly fun week, but we'll end up with a published anthology and an adoring audience to show for it.
Grades 4 – 5, June 23 – 27
