SUMMARY:Read And Write Nights - May 2024
DESCRIPTION:Your favorite monthly virtual program is back…\nOh yes\, it’s Read And Write Night!\nKalamazoo County youth in grades K–5 are invited to join RAWK volunteers and volunteers from the Western Michigan University chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association to share our monthly picture book title. Working in small groups\, we will read aloud and then respond to the story with using engaging and creative prompts that encourage us to discuss\, write\, and draw! After small group time\, we’ll have a chance to share our responses with the whole group. \nHear a perspective that is new to you\, enjoy reading together\, express your ideas\, and find power in the written word. \nAll Read and Write Nights will take place via Google Meet. \nEach participating family will receive a copy of our monthly book prior to the event\nThis month’s session is open to 16 families \n\nRegistration opens on April 10th\nClick here to register\n\nOur May title is Home is In Between\nwritten by Mitali Perkins and illustrated by Lavanya Naidu \nShanti and her parents say goodbye to the monsoon rains in their Indian village. They move to a snowy town on the other side of the world. At first\, it isn’t easy for Shanti to be new. Back and forth she trudges between her family’s Bengali traditions and her new country’s culture. Again and again\, in between. \nShe feasts on biryani rice while kids in town eat hot dogs and PB&J sandwiches. She watches Bollywood movies at home and Hollywood movies with new friends. Is she still Indian? Is she becoming American? How should she define home? \n\n\n\n\n
